Whoa!! This is some raw shit right here!! Totally D.I.Y. and that's what we're
after...all fucked up and backyard.
It's got a bunch of bands from all over the world. CRIMINALS OF EVOLUTION are
up first with some really abrasive shit and Manga-style graphics... really chaotic
stuff. THEODOR BASTARD from Russia is up next with some really
weird animation and eerie music. The first un-animated sequence comes from New
York's PETE MISSING and DJ HAZZARD which has
a kind of industrial feel to it with chaotic live footage slices. London's DEAD
SILENCE remind me of THE STREETS... beats, drum'n'bass, hip-hop all
mashed togther. 2OOODS from Wales serve up some hardcore punk
and squatter sounds. The DEAD PLANTS are the fucking show-stealers
of this DVD with their super-raw rockabilly and fucked up video of a mechanical
horse that shits... crazy shit but good shit!! Bristol's PINK PORK CHOPS deliver
some crusty anarcho squat punk with loads of meat carcasses in the video. New
Zealand's MISSING TEETH play straight up hardcore punk and they
rule. If the DEAD PLANTS weren't on this DVD these guys would
have been the highlight for sure. Brighton's REN is really weird
shit... George W. Bush's face all distorted with some fucked up samples. BROKEN are
up next and these guys rule. I was hooked on their 'Homeland Insecurity' CD for
ages. They are pure American Hardcore and you get a bit of an interview with
them too. London's K-LINE are the most melodic band on the DVD
and have that kind of English take on American punk rock sound. ENGINE
ROOM from Brighton are a percussive, tribal clan and HEADJAM close
the DVD with their female-fronted blend of punk rock and live dub. This is a
really fucking cool DVD and it's perhaps one of the wierdest things I've ever
seen and I'm really looking forward to the next volume. |

I wonder, if this DVD is meant as a collection of videos by underground punk
and industrial bands who would never get a chance on mainstream television? Or
are these clips expressions of art in themselves, which just happen to have a
particular band playing to it, so of like a soundtrack? My conclusion, after
playing it a couple of times, would be both. Underground music has to have a
good video to get its point across in this digital age, yet it also has to show
a sincere side and maintain that raw punk rock feeling. On the level of art I
think Theodor Bastard stands out with a beautiful and dark cartoon
like video, yet if you listen to the music, I am sure English band K-Line and
American band Broken stand out as the best bands for us punkrock
kids. Right in the middle you have a band like Pink Pork Chops,
whose video will make you an instant vegetarian. It is a varied DVD to say the
least, but all bands have in common they are artists who now can get their ideas
and thoughts out through audio and video in a great way through very limited
resources. |

With the advent in popularity and availability of recording and filmmaking software
and equipment for the general public, people are at last beginning to realize
that they cannot only record their own music and videos without big budgets
or vast film crews, but also compete on an equal footing with the multinationals
by releasing said products themselves. The excellent S.C.R.A.P. Records
(or to give it it’s full title, Sub Cultural Radikal Arts
Productions) of Brighton have released this compilation DVD to
demonstrate that, far from competing with the multinational entertainment
industry, they can produce a product which betters many commercial DVDs
in every respect. The packaging and inlays of this compilation DVD are
all produced to the highest standard, and add to it’s excellent content.
Focusing mainly on acts from the traveller/squat scene, the material ranges
from the folkabilly rock of the Dead Plants, to the hip
hop stylings of the excellent Dead Silence. However, it
is the punk and rock bands who just about make up the majority of the material
on here, including the legendary 2OOODS and my personal
favourite, London-based post-hardcore types K-Line. The
videos themselves range from the standard “band plays to crowd” to
the insane animations of Russia’s Theodor Bastard,
and are interspersed with a series of shorts mainly shot at festivals,
which lends the whole project a sense of narrative and continuity. Whether
you want to support truly underground activities or just hear (and see!)
some excellent bands doing their thang, this DVD should be right at the
top of your shopping list. Also, look out for the forthcoming sequel in
what thankfully promises to be a long-running series. |

I have to say that this DVD grabbed my attention right from the word go. The
imaginative way the tracks are introduced and linked ensure you keep your
eye on the ball. And what a ball we have! Psychedelia from Brighton’s Criminals
of Evolution, a stunning animated mix of Metropolis and Guernica
from Theodor Bastard from St Petersburg. Ren’s
CGI film of George W waxing lyrical. Live Mayhem bringing Global Warning
from Pete Missing and DJ Hazard out of New York. Even
the more conventional performance footage and what could be dull self adulatory
ads for Dirty Squatters’/Scrap’s other wares and traveller,
eco-warrior propaganda are well put together - they are neatly doctored
and edited in such a varied manner that the overall impression is of an
excellently integrated product. No doubt the whole thing would be even
better viewed on one of those giant home cinema systems in a darkened room
enhanced with aromatic ambience enhancement. But on a crappy little 14” telly
the effect is good enough for me! |
