A
Review of a DS Show in Deepest, Darkest Manhattan

play the ABC No RIO in Manhattan, NY
Being
the late working chump that I be, I was not able to make this early
evening punk show before the first two bands had already played. I
walked downstairs just as Humyn Sewage's last song ended and
managed to see four seriously punked up manics thump out thier last
note with a vengeance.
I
could not, of course, miss Public Nuisance. They've been kicking
out party punk/drunk, swillin' pogo fall-down music in a hard-drivin'
'77 style for the past seven or eight years. As the Nuisance ripped
through their familiar and welcome set, it became apparent to this
old punk that several if not most of the squatters for whom this
benefit was organised didn't venture downstairs to watch the band.
This is a sad fact. Most bands break up or fade away before they
even practice as many times as these boys have played these benefits
for free, donating their talents to often forgetful punk-squatter
anarcho-socializers.
Enough
with these punx! Let's get to why we all came here tonight. 2000
D. S. (that's Dirty Squatters to the uninformed) is a British
Punk band... and a crusty one at that. If there was any hint of missing
bodies during Public Nuisance, 2000 D.S. left no doubt as to whom
these punks came to see. Never in my life have I seen so many white
people with dreadlocks falling down all over each other; with all
the action of the swirling pit, the chanting vocals of lead throatist
Greg (or Gary, I was too pissed to remember) and all those that joined
him with their throaty expulsions of less than air; the basement
of this lovely gathering place developed quite a stink.
A sweaty, crusty, dirty, noisy, smelly, bloody mess is what
it was.
Even
after having drank several pints of snakebite at Mona's with these guys
I still don't remember their names, imagine that, but this band seriously
impressed me. With plenty of blub-blubs and wah-wahs coming from bass
and guitar respectively and lots of "GRRRR" coming from both,
the music swirled around the frantic drumming of the lead singer's brother
(both bros. freshly bald after a spot of bother with those dreaded little
creepy-crawlies) into a thumping tribal complaint with the urgency of
the determined. This band put on one of the best grinding harcore shows
I've seen in months.
2000
D.S. will be playing a couple more gigs in the city (including a
C-Squat benefit on Oct 30 and ABC No Rio on Oct 31); then they will
move on to some other rat-infested hole. Check them out. Some words
to the wise: wear your steel toes and please support your local Punk
Rock bands.
